of Antique Brass Bed.
Antique brass beds are more recent than many other antique styles. In the post-Victorian era metal beds in both iron and brass rose to prominence. Prior to this the predominant bed making material was wood. The concept behind the metal bed transition was longevity. Since metal is more durable than wood, a metal bed would last longer than a wooden one.
Metalworking also offered a different set of options for bed makers. With wood, there wasn’t a whole lot to do in the way of shaping. A woodworker took the wood and carved the desired result out from it. Working with metal however, you pull, twist, hammer, and shape the metal to fit your vision. Carving isn’t done with metal, rather it is etched. Antique brass beds therefore, will be quite different from antique wooden beds.
Another unique aspect of antique brass beds is the care they require. Iron is fairly chemically inert, so long as you keep it away from water. Brass however, needs to be polished to maintain its unique look.
