Antique Brass Beds

Antique Brass Beds

The origin of brass dates back to the seventeenth century.  It is a combination of the metals copper and zinc and was used to make decorative objects because of its unique color.  Most commonly candle sticks, dishes, and chandeliers were made from brass.  It is only natural that beds would began to be made from this unique and colorful metal.  Brass beds were first made in the 1840s in England.  Often times beds were made of brass and accented with wrought iron.  Beds were hand crafted both elaborately and simply and many designs were incooperated in head and foot boards.  Antique brass beds are widely popular today because of their chic, stylish appearance.

Because antique brass beds have the potential to date back centuries they need to be restored after purchase.  Restoring them will allow them to look new and well kept.  While restoring a brass bed can prove strenuous it is much easier then restoring an antique wooden bed.  You will need much time and patience while  you are restoring your brass bed and is important to follow every instruction as best as possible to get the best outcome.

First you need to remove any shellac or lacquer coats that may have been placed on the frame.  You can do this will lacquer thinner or denatured alcohol.  When doing this make sure you do not scratch the brass, using old cloths instead of steel wool will help insure this.  This may need to be done several times to ensure it is fully stripped.  Next stains and discoloration need to be removed from the antique brass bed, this can be done with a thick grime removing cleanser.  The bed frame then needs to be buffed to get rid of any scratches or further stains.  This should be done until you can see the natural shine of the metal.  Next comes the polishing, the bed frame must be polished to keep its natural shine.  Lastly the bed frame will need to be coated with some sort of sealant to hold its new beauty.

Following that restoring process will allow all antique brass beds to look their finest.  However,  you are not done with resorting the bed there may be more damage that needs to be fixed.  The bed must be disassembled so that it can be easily inspected.  Stray metal caused by craftsmanship needs to be sanded off so it does not harm anyone.  All joints must also be checked for strength.  Once all of theses things are done the bed can be reassembled and is ready for use.

A fully restored antique brass bed will look amazing in any bedroom of your house.  It will bring a timeless touch to a stylish look.    To add to the feel of your newly restored brass antique you may want to decorate lightly by placing other brass objects around the room.   However, no matter the décor of your room your brass bed will be its highlight.  Its radiant color is enough to catch anyone’s eye while its age is simply breathtaking.

Antique brass beds are a great choice to consider for anyone looking for a way to bring life to their bedroom.
