of Antique Iron Bed Frames.
Antique bedroom furniture is often sought after and collected by people that prefer the aesthetics of a bygone era. Classic design categories such as Art Deco, Victorian and Craftsman are still popular with many homeowners today, and are often incorporated into modern interior design. Antique iron bed frames are available in many such designs, which is why they are actively sought out by many people today.
An antique iron bed offers a unique combination of classic design, elegant craftsmanship and exceptionally solid construction. Beds made during their peak of popularity (during the second half of the 20th century) were most often hand forged by skilled artisans. This handmade approach is what sets these beds apart from those that were made post World War I, when they became mass produced by factory machines. The clean castings and attention to detail that was a hallmark of a handmade iron bed were often overlooked when the manufacturing process was taken over by the factory. This is one of the main reasons that beds made prior to WWI are the most commonly collected.
Regardless of whether you prefer the highly ornate or the honest and simple, there are antique iron bed frames to suit nearly every taste. Victorian bed frames, typified by their prolific use of decoration and ornamentation, are among the most popular of this style bed. This style incorporates uniquely feminine visual aesthetics, with soft curves and lots of floral-based decoration. They are often highlighted with color, ranging from soft pastels to more vibrant, saturated hues.
Art Deco bed frames are also commonly collected antiques. Largely a product of early 20th century design, Art Deco aesthetics generally feature bold and striking outlines with interior geometric patterns or sharply curving shapes. The style was meant to represent the modernity of the 20th century and is usually highly ornamental. Art Deco bed frames hold to this style through the use of heavy, striking bedposts that are connected with webs of iron or brass work.
For those that prefer a more basic look, antique iron bed frames can be found in both Austere and Craftsman styles. Austere was primarily a reaction to the Great Depression of the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. The idea of lavish, ornately designed furniture became less popular as the economy of the country was in a sharp decline. Instead, the simple lines and curves of the Austere style seemed to better represent the times, and as such became quite popular. Similarly, the earlier Craftsman style was created in reaction to the ornate style of the Victorian era. Like Austere, the Craftsman style is typified by simple lines and a sense of openness.Antique iron bed frames, despite their age, are still prized for their beauty, solid construction and unique designs. They can be found relatively inexpensively through many antique shops, but these inexpensive pieces generally require a great deal of restoration work. If you have the budget and do not want to spend the time and effort it takes to adequately restore one of these frames, they can be found in restored condition through many antique dealers, but they can be somewhat expensive when purchased in this manner.
