Antique Iron Beds

Iron beds have been extremely popular for many centuries.  There have been beds constructed of iron in many civilizations world wide.  Antique iron beds are becoming popular in our time because they are relatively easy to restore.  They add a classic touch to any bedroom and when restored correctly they look beautiful.  An antique bed is something that has great history and by choosing an Iron bed you are able to bring that history into your home.

It is not often that you find antique iron beds that have been restored for sale.  Often times you will find iron beds that need much restoring before they are usable.  Compared to wood antique beds, the restoration of iron beds is easy.

First, you must wash the whole frame with soapy water to remove any build up of dirt on the surface of the frame.

Second, you must strip the frame of any sealants it might have; paint, lacquer or shellac.  You must do this with a soft cloth and not steel wool to avoid further damaging the iron.  This is often the most tedious part because each section of the antique iron bed will have to be checked numerous times.   It is best to let the remover soak in before beginning the removal process.

Third, all rust that the bed frame has acquired bust be treated and removed.  This prevents the rust from further deteriorating the bed.  The easiest way to remove rust is by using a wire brush only on the spots effected.

Fourth, if you are wishing to leave the bed in its natural appearance without any paint then the bed frame must be polished.  After it is polished it must be coated with a sealant so the polish does not wear away.  This will also protect the bed from further damage.

If you wish to paint the frame then it does not need to be polished.  Instead, choose a spray paint that is for metal.  Once you have sprayed the entire bed evenly let it dry.  Once it has dried a top coat should be applied so the paint does not chip.

As with all antique iron beds you will have to check for any craftsmanship errors.  Because most antique beds were made by hand there are errors that could potentially be harmful.  Sharp edges should be sanded so they do not harm anyone who touches it.  Joints and bonds within the bed should be checked for strength.  Weak sections of the bed frame should be replaced or reinforced so it does not break.

Once your antique iron bed has been restored fully you will be able to set it up in your bedroom.  An antique bed of any sort brings a timeless touch to any bedroom but an iron bed brings a style that no other antique bed possesses.  Your bedroom will be complete with your newly restored iron bed and it is a great centerpiece for any room.  To add to the touch of your new iron antique you may want to decorate lightly with other iron objects around the room.  You could even theme your room in the era your bed was created.  There are many wonderful ideas that can be drawn from this style of bed and it is truly a gift when your room is complete.
