Antique King Sized Bed

An antique king sized bed is something of a misnomer. The modern “king size” actually originated in North America. So genuine antiques of the largest size from the old country would only be a queen according to modern manufacturing. In fact, the size is actually marketed as king anywhere but in the United States.

So if you’re looking for a bed to put a king sized mattress in, you’ll likely need a modern adaptation of an antique style. They simply didn’t build antique king sized beds to the same specifications we have today. There’s actually an extremely interesting reason behind this.

Scientists have discovered a very real link between the nutrition a child gets while growing up and their adult height. Genetically you aren’t programmed with a set height, but rather you are given a maximum height potential by your genes. In order to fulfill that potential you need to receive enough nutritious food while you grow up. This correlates to a link between taller countries and countries with good nutrition. This is also why people seem to have been shorter centuries ago; nutrition was far less widespread and developed.  So the antique king sized beds were created for people that were actually smaller than the people today.
