An antique looking king bed is a better term to describe a bed that looks like an antique but is not. As described in the other page on king beds, the king size from the United States doesn’t exist in Europe. Since a major source for antique beds is the Victorian Era, the products would be from Europe, and thus they wouldn’t fit a true king sized mattress.

So the compromise the industry has adopted is to create antique looking king beds. They look as if they were made in the same time period as genuine antiques; but they are manufactured to modern sizing standards. This is something to be aware of when bed shopping. A bed frame that looks antique is one thing. Needing to sleep on a mattress made of hay in order to fit into your bed is another thing entirely, and something that is beyond the price most sleepers want to pay.

This is a consideration you should make regardless of whether you’re in the market for an antique looking king bed, or a genuine antique in a different size. If you are going for an authentic antique, you will likely need to have a mattress custom built to fit the bed, which further increases the cost. However, it also increases the style points the bed receives, so it all depends on what you value most.
