of Iron Bed Reproduction.
An antique wrought iron bed is often considered to be “the ultimate” in classic bedroom furniture design. They are highly sought after by collectors all over the world and can add a unique charm to most any bedroom. However, like any antique, finding one in pristine condition can be a real challenge. And if you do happen to find an appropriate piece, it will more than likely be quite expensive. Fortunately, an antique iron bed reproduction can provide all of the aesthetics of an older piece, but be able to do so without the astronomical price tag.
The iron bed is product of late 19th century design. Pieces made during this era were almost always handmade, designed and built by craftsmen that took great pride in their work. The iron was hand poured into molds, castings were polished by hand, and even the finishes were manually applied. And while these beds were manufactured on both sides of “the pond”, American iron beds were generally considered to be of a higher quality than those made in Europe. Regardless of where they came from however, the beds made previous to World War I are the most sought after.
If you think that a classic, antique American iron bed would be the perfect addition to your bedroom, but don’t want to pay the hefty price tag that will more than likely accompany it, then an iron bed reproduction might be the perfect solution. A reproduction can be, on average, as much as fifty percent less expensive than a comparable antique; which is a significant savings considering an antique can often cost thousands of dollars. Of course, antiques can be found for less money, but these often require some restoration work in order to be usable.
A reproduction, on the other hand, can have the look and feel of an antique, but because they are made using modern materials and techniques, they require less maintenance and are generally more solid. Furthermore, modern reproductions can be found in finishes that were simply unavailable during the heyday of iron beds. This makes them easier to work into contemporary interior designs, as the varying finishes can be more easily matched to modern color schemes. But for those that want their reproductions to mimic the originals as much as possible, there are still old-style finishes that are available as well. And some of these can even be made to look weathered and worn.
Finding a quality iron bed reproduction is relatively simple, at least in most major metropolitan areas. Most major furniture stores will have at least a few of these reproductions for sale. However, if you’re seriously considering purchasing one of these beds, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. First, the easiest way to judge the quality of an iron bed is by inspecting the metal itself. Heavy gauge steel is the preferred material for bedposts and other weight supporting elements. It is also important to inspect all of the welds to ensure than they are of high quality, as well as free from any rough edges. If the bed looks and feels solid, it usually is.
