of Iron Beds.
Iron beds may not immediately spring out as a source of stylistic inspiration, but that is because a modern iron bed is often about as inspirational as doing laundry. However antique iron beds are often a thing of beauty. Hand crafted and built to last, these beds are a testament to the principle that if you pursue a craft and do things the right way, then you can build something that lasts.
In today’s economy, cheaper is often confused with better. “Oh look, I can get lunch for 99 cents!” Few people look beyond the price tag at what it is they are buying. When it happens in regards to lunch, the worst that you get is a case of indigestion. However, when you buy cheaply produced furniture, you end up spending hundreds, or heaven forbid thousands, on something that breaks down all too easily. There was a time when furniture was built to last not mere years, but a lifetime. Genuine antique furniture pieces are heirlooms of that time; quietly watching as the scramble for a buck rots the soul out of industry from within.
Not that there is anything inherently wrong with wanting a good deal on your furniture, but there’s a difference between a good deal and a low price. You can find a great deal on iron beds, even antique ones. That doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be picking up your new bed for under $100 though. Iron is a high quality material, and decorative wrought iron is a time intensive thing to produce. A great deal on those beds won’t look like something you picked up at Ikea. However, it also has a much longer lifespan than your average self assembled out of the box furniture does as well.
While simply being made of iron is not necessarily an indication of a bed’s quality, you can bet that a producer of shoddy iron beds won’t be in business for long. So, if you have a question about the reliability of your producer, simply look at their history. We have been in business for more than a decade, and we are still going strong. You can be assured that we stand behind what we sell, whether it is iron beds or another antique style.Production of iron beds began in 1850, and at the time they were hand crafted. The quality and craftsmanship was of prime consideration, as these beds were touted as being even more durable than wood beds, and you can imagine how durable an old four post wooden bed was. After World War I, mass production of metal beds kicked in. The war had effectively created the infrastructure to mass produce just about anything made of metal. Post war, barbed wire, mines, bullets, and artillery were no longer needed, so the infrastructure looked for a new use. They found that use in producing goods for the average household. Bed frames just happened to be among the easy to repurpose items, and so they saw a huge increase in manufacturing.
