Oak Antique Beds

Oak beds date back to the 16th century.  These oak antique beds are now very sought after pieces of history.  Their make is usually very elaborate and the woodworking that went into them is extensive.  Because oak is very malleable and porous it can be difficult to maintain and over time it can become unusable.  Because of this many older oak beds require restoration that can be very strenuous and time consuming.  This should be kept in mind when you are purchasing an antique bed made of any wood.

Oak antique beds have a long history dating back to medieval times when only the richest of people and royalty were allowed to posses them.  Oak beds were often made with large posts that curtains could be hung from.  This allowed the bed area to contain heat so the person sleeping could be kept warm.  These beds were also constructed about 2 feet from the ground.  This protected the sleeping individual from mice or any other creature that could venture into the room from getting into the bed.  Because they were made for the rich and royal these beds were made by the finest craftsmen of the time.  They often posses very elaborate woodworking with many patterns and designs carved into them.

As time passed oak beds became less elaborate and were made for people of all classes.  Oak beds were commonly made because the thickness of the oak made them very durable and sturdy.   These beds were not easily moved because of their mass and weight so often they were left in the houses they were made for.   Their ability to disassemble was also limited because of the way they were made so this also made it difficult to move a bed made of oak.  These problems combined with the fact that these beds were rarely sealed, create many problems form the owners of oak antique beds.

They require much restoration and often times only parts can be used.  However, after hard work is put into restoring the bed it will look truly amazing.  Oak antique beds can not be duplicated and their history is so amazing that having one in your home is truly priceless.
