of Wrought Iron Beds.
The first wrought iron beds that were constructed appeared in the time period of the Egyptian Empire. The Pharaohs of Egypt had very elaborate beds formed from all types of metal, commonly gold, ebony and wrought iron. These beds were favored because they were lifted from the ground which prevented insects and rodents from crawling into the bed. They were also favored because their elaborate designs and metals showed the riches the Pharaoh possessed.
The Roman Empire also began to construct similar beds for the same purpose. These beds were far less elaborate then the beds of the Pharaohs and were constructed for their sturdiness. The wrought iron beds were welded together in weak points, making the bed able to withstand more weight and wear. These beds were also less expensive then forming a bed from wood or other metals. The benefits of building such a bed seemed to outweigh all other possibilities.
Wrought iron beds were also constructed in the Victorian era with a unique style. Like all previous beds made of wrought iron these beds were hand crafted and very elaborate. These beds could be purchased by, or constructed for, any individual regardless of class. Large amounts of wrought iron were available at a low cost. The beds of the lower class were, however, constructed less elaborately because the cost fell mostly in labor. Beds from this era are still circulating; however it is rare to come across one. They are usually passed down as family heirlooms.
Wrought Iron beds became extremely popular world wide following the Victorian era and were produced in the United States as soon as the pilgrims docked near Plymouth Rock. In 1941 when the United States entered the First World War production on these beds was halted because all metal was used for war efforts. Production of the beds assumed as soon as the war ended. It was then that production methods changed. Beds of wrought iron began to be mass produced and to accomplish that molds were made for the bed frames and melted metal was poured in. This technique allowed many more beds to be made, however it took the uniqueness and elaborate build away from the style.
Wrought iron beds are still widely popular today because they are still very cost affective and stylish. They are readily available at many furniture retailers and come in all sizes and designs. These beautiful beds also are easy to maintain. They are durable so they are able to withstand the test of time and metal does not require staining or sealing to keep its original look. From time to time wrought iron beds require polishing so that their shiny store bought look can be restored.Purchasing a new or antique wrought iron bed is a wise decision for any bedroom. Purchasing an elaborately designed bed will bring romance and style to any room. If you are interested in the modern and simple look then wrought iron can provide that as well. Wrought iron is also an excellent choice for any Childs bedroom because of its stability and durability.
